Flaxmore Vineyards is located in the Moutere hills area of Nelson at the north-west of New Zealand’s South Island. The site of our 9-hectare vineyard comprises gentle north-facing, clay gravel slopes of a small valley that was first established with apple orchards over 100 years ago (with a history of pastoral land-care dating back to the early settlers in the 1870’s). In time, those low yielding & unirrigated hillside orchards supplied premium apples for export markets, reflecting the sheer depth of flavour sites such as this are capable of.

In 2006, Stuart & Patricia (‘P’) Anderson acquired 28 hectares of prime land in the Moutere's Flaxmore Valley. These slopes are perfectly suited to Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris. A history of the Moutere area describes Flaxmore (in the late 1800’s) as being a “small oasis in a challenging environment” - just perfect for a vineyard!

Our approach from the outset has been an absolute focus on vineyard quality. Since 2011 we have worked closely with Neudorf Vineyards, supplying them with our grapes (and continue to do so). They have pioneered fine wine from the Moutere and we are total converts to the special qualities of this Nelson sub-region and the unique wines it produces.

From the vine to the bottle our wines are fully accredited by Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand.

Improving the land and local environment is important to us – for both sustainability and natural beauty. We created an irrigation pond of just under 1 ha which is landscaped to attract a range of native & exotic birdlife. Over the last 10 years we’ve planted 5,000 trees and shrubs – a process that's ongoing.

In 2019, we opened a cellar door. Created within an existing farm building, the cellar door overlooks the Pinot Gris vines, with Mount Arthur’s snowy top visible in the distance. And our latest innovation is an Art Gallery, which we opened in 2020. We’re now really enjoying welcoming guests for wine tasting, sales & beautiful vineyard walks, offering a chance to explore the vines and take in the fabulous views, as well as enjoying some great local, national and international art. Flaxmore is a family vineyard, so the kids get involved whenever possible. Above, Robbie and Stuart get the nets ready to go onto Block 3 in 2018… with a little extra help from Barolo! Below, Issy helps Stuart in 2016 to number the rows in Block 2.
